The Lawyer Assistance Program (LAP) is a free, confidential, non-profit counseling program. LAP assists judges, lawyers, law students, legal staff and their families who experience personal problems that interfere with their personal lives or their ability to serve as counsel or officers of the court.

Everyone experiences personal or work related problems at some point.  Early intervention is the key to resolving these concerns. Call the Lawyer Assistance Program for assistance if you are concerned about your own or someone else’s substance abuse, mental health or ability to handle anger.

In addition to the trained staff, the backbone of the Lawyer Assistance Program is a network of attorneys who have volunteered their time and services to help a lawyer in need.

Mission Statement:

The MSBA through the LAP Committee is committed to providing confidential assistance to the legal community by offering assistance with alcohol/substance abuse, mental health issues, personal problems and continued support to insure long term success.

Together with the Maryland State Bar Association, the Lawyer Assistance Committee and staff are committed to helping each individual and in assisting each workplace in creating an atmosphere that encourages professional growth and excellence.

MSBA'S Lawyer Assistance Program is recognized by the Maryland Court of Appeals:

The Lawyer Assistance Program (f/k/a: Lawyer Counseling Committee) "…means a group of individuals that: (I) is recognized by the Court of Appeals; (II) is a standing committee of the Maryland State Bar Association, or of a local bar association; (iii) consists of lawyers and other individuals necessary to carry out the function of the committee; and (iv) evaluates and helps a lawyer in need of treatment and rehabilitation for: l. Substance abuse; or 2. Any other physical, emotional or mental condition that adversely affects the ability of the lawyer to practice law in accordance with the rules adopted by the Court of Appeals. " The Maryland Annotated Code, Business Occupations and Professions", Sec. 10-502 (a) Definitions.
